Standard & Poor’s declared Argentina in default after the government missed a deadline for paying interest of restructured bonds on July 31, 2014. The government wasn’t able to reach an agreement with holdout bondholders, and Argentina encounter its second default in 13 years. However, there are some differences between the latest default and one in 2001. Background will be key to account for this matter.
As mentioned above, Argentina defaulted on almost $100 billion of its sovereign debt in 2001. The default was marked by a collapsing economy, unsustainable debt (about 150 percent of GDP) and, more importantly, by the inability of the government to keep making debt payments. It means that they couldn’t take matters into their own hands. Thus the government negotiated about debt restructuring twice in 2005 and 2xxx, with around 92% of the holders of defaulted debt accepting “haircuts” on the value of their bonds.
